VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

About the Stokesdale Fire District Inc.

The Stokesdale Fire District Inc. is a combination department career/volunteer serving Northwest Guilford County and Southwest Rockingham County.

We provide service to approximately 9,000 residents in a 36 square mile district. We operate three (3) Engines, one (1) Tanker, one (1) Squad and one (1) Brush Truck out of one (1) station. Our department has a career staff of 17 full-time,
5 part-time and 12 volunteers.

Expectations

Although no prior experience or training is required, you need more than just a desire to help people. Our service is performed at various hours and often in uncertain and hazardous environments. Listed below are some of the expectations you will need to consider before volunteering.

  • No disqualifying criminal record (as determined by the Chief)
  • No disqualifying driving record (as determined by the Chief)
  • Have own method of transportation

Training

  • Firefighter training: to be considered an interior firefighter with our department you must attend the classes outlined in the NFPA 1403 program, as well as additional classes included in the department minimum training requirements.
  • Attend a minimum of 36 hours yearly broken down to 18 hours each six (6) month period. (18 hours January 1st – June 15th and 18 hours July 1st – December 15th). These hours are required in house training in addition to any classes being taken outside of the department. Of these 36 required hours only six (6) hours of EMT training, each training period will count towards the total of 18 hours.
  • EMT training: to maintain EMT status with North Carolina you must obtain the required 21 hours of continuing education each year. As noted this is in addition to the firefighter training required.

 

Service in the Stokesdale Fire Department requires TIME and COMMITMENT. If you have the desire to serve people in their time of need and you have the time, you are a candidate. The department must make the decision to invest in you with our time and resources to provide adequate training and safety for your service. It is therefore crucial that we have adequate assurance of your commitment. If you want to make the COMMITMENT, then WE NEED YOU. If now is not the right time, we respectfully ask that you delay your interest until the timing is right.

Criteria for Membership

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for volunteer membership with the Stokesdale Fire District Inc.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must reside within the Stokesdale Fire District response area.
  • Must possess a valid N.C. driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain one.
  • Must sign a release for the department to conduct a driving history and criminal history check.
  • Must have never pled guilty to, entered a plea of no contest, or have been convicted of any felony regardless of the time span. Must have never been charged or convicted of any crime related to arson.
  • Misdemeanor offenses will be taken into consideration by the Chief and applicant denial will be at the Chief’s discretion.
  • Must pass a medical examination provided by the department physician.

 

 

Criteria for Membership

The applicant must submit the following:

  • A completed Stokesdale Fire District Inc. Volunteer Firefighter Application. Must include all required documents.
  • Copy of a valid N.C. driver’s license (as noted above)
  • Attend three (3) regular training sessions. If the applicant is unable to attend the minimum number of required meetings within two (2) months of submitting an application, they will no longer be considered for membership.
  • Applicant meets with department officer’s once all criteria have been met.
  • Applicant will be scheduled for a department medical examination.
  • If medical examination is passed and criminal and driving history is satisfactory, applicant will be added to department roster, issued appropriate equipment and will be eligible to respond to approved dispatches.
