The West Yadkin Fire Department accepts applications for membership year round and encourages anyone with a desire to serve others, or just with a curiosity of what we do to come speak with one of our members and if desired enough, apply for membership with our organization. We seek men and women with strong moral fiber and a willingness to put others first.\u00a0 This is a family of members, and as a member, you are part of that family.\u00a0 It is hard work, but the reward of serving others greatly outweighs that difficulty.<\/p>

No experience or knowledge is required<\/strong>\u00a0of the job.\u00a0 We offer in house training and have capabilities of getting members into classes needed to become a certified and qualified emergency services provider in several different areas of fire department operations if they desire.\u00a0 These include fire, rescue, and medical certifications.\u00a0\u00a0Upon completion and returning of your application, it will be reviewed by department staff and if approved, you will meet with the membership committee, be issued turnout gear and equipment, and placed on a probationary period.\u00a0 During that period of no less than\u00a03 months and no longer than\u00a01 year, you will have to obtain a minimum of\u00a036 hours of training for the department including completing a training packet provided by the department.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

The training packet provides a means for learning basic fire ground operations and procedures in which there are practical evolutions you will have to demonstrate proficiency in before advancing further.\u00a0 When this probationary period is fulfilled, you will be brought up for vote by the membership at the next\u00a0scheduled business meeting.\u00a0\u00a0Applicants for membership must be 18 years old or older.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The department also has a Cadet program for those ages 15 to 17 wishing to join the department. The cadet will have limitations as to what they can do on a scene, but will get a lot of hands on training that will serve them well for the future as a firefighter after the age of 18. So, why would you want to be a firefighter?\u00a0 For that matter, why would you want to volunteer your time to be a firefighter?\u00a0 Firefighting is strenuous, dangerous, and potentially deadly work that often\u00a0involves tragedies and stressful situations\u00a0for both those who call for help and us as first responders.\u00a0 Thankfully\u00a0we have\u00a0people out there that\u00a0are willing to step forward and take on\u00a0these challenges and dangers\u00a0in service of others.\u00a0 There are both career and volunteer firefighters across the nation.\u00a0 You may be surprised to know that the vast majority of U.S. Firefighters are volunteers.\u00a0 So, that brings on another question to answer.\u00a0 What if volunteer firefighters didn\u2019t volunteer?\u00a0 If that were to be an issue, it would be astronomically more expensive for local governments to provide fire protection service because they would have to resort to paying for all the firefighters needed to sufficiently staff apparatus.\u00a0 And in some cases, fire protection could not be offered which would lead to sky rocketing insurance premiums.\u00a0 In Combination Fire Departments such as ours, we have a balance of paid and volunteer members which has lower operating costs than an all paid department but still better staffing than an all volunteer one.\u00a0 It is a fact that the rate of new volunteers coming forth to join fire departments has steadily declined over the recent years across the nation.\u00a0 Things that have attributed to this trend include economic, family, and even generational changes to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0One\u00a0step\u00a0our department has taken\u00a0in response to\u00a0these changes is\u00a0the\u00a0staffing\u00a0of a paid\u00a0firefighter every day of the week during the time that most people including our\u00a0volunteer members may be away at their day jobs.\u00a0 While these paid members certainly make a huge difference in our response times and overall ability to respond, they can\u2019t be looked at as a full solution to manpower for us.\u00a0 One firefighter is limited in what they can do on an emergency scene depending on the severity.\u00a0 So, it is crucial for us to continue to have volunteers regardless of having paid staff during the day.\u00a0\u00a0Even with\u00a0new volunteer rates down,\u00a0we can confidently\u00a0say that our department\u00a0has and\u00a0is seeking and taking measures to combat this in order to attract, train, and retain new volunteer members to sustain adequate staffing.\u00a0 Through these measures, our department has continued to sustain a strong membership of dedicated people.\u00a0<\/p>

With that said, we are continuously in\u00a0search\u00a0and need of new members.\u00a0 Firefighting is a team based job and it takes a team of\u00a0personnel to accomplish\u00a0a job safely.\u00a0 An average structure fire requires a department to have over 20 personnel on scene to effectively and safely put the fire out.\u00a0 That can be very taxing to our resources and available manpower.\u00a0 Again, that is why we need people, perhaps like YOU to volunteer.\u00a0 Remember, you are not volunteering for us.\u00a0 You are volunteering with us, for your community!\u00a0 It is a great calling to help others in their time of need and to potentially save a life.\u00a0 That is what overshadows the \u201cbad\u201d that can come with this job.\u00a0 You will find that\u00a0firefighting\u00a0is a camaraderie of great people.\u00a0 Firefighters are family to each other and it is a relationship you will develop that is unlike any other.\u00a0 Additional advantages of being a volunteer firefighter are the educational and employment opportunities it opens up for you.\u00a0 There are few places you can get free education that can lead to a job.\u00a0 A volunteer fire department is actually one of those places.\u00a0 All training that leads to certification is free to you through the department.\u00a0\u00a0Grants for higher education in college are also available through the fire service.\u00a0 Unlike volunteer firefighters, career firefighters are most often required to be fully certified in many areas related to the job.\u00a0 But if\u00a0becoming a career firefighter is\u00a0an idea of yours, being a volunteer can be greatly helpful.\u00a0 You will gain valuable knowledge and experience and can highly increase your chances of becoming a career firefighter.\u00a0\u00a0In fact\u00a0the West Yadkin Fire Department has\u00a0several\u00a0members who are career firefighters in other cities such as nearby\u00a0Charlotte and Winston-Salem\u00a0and several who are career EMTs or Paramedics.\u00a0 So, now answer that question\u00a0we first asked\u00a0and remember this; There\u00a0is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
