About the Harmony VFD

Our Story

It all started more than 80 years ago, when the Statesville Fire Department was doing what firefighters do best — assisting others.

In 1938, the Statesville Fire Department helped organize and found the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department (Harmony VFD) to serve our beautiful farmland, family homes, and local businesses. In the 1950s, the fine firefighters from Statesville helped us purchase a brand new 500-gallon pumper truck. This was our second truck, and to this day, you can see this historic icon every year in the Harmony Parade.

In 1963, our proud community and firefighters acquired property on E. Memorial Highway (beside EG Enterprise), to build a new station, and it officially became the first home to the Harmony VFD. Today, you can find us in our newer home at 3351 Harmony Highway. Our modern station is 9600 sq. ft. and houses seven (7) fire department vehicles; it has enough space to allow us to grow with our growing hometown.

In the late 1990s, Harmony VFD  found more ways to assist our community through medical services.  We purchased equipment and attended classes to become trained to handle any emergency situation. We began with training in the delivery of basic first aid & CPR. Today, all of our First Responders are state-certified medical responders or EMTs. Our medical services are an important part of our service to you, as an estimated 50-60% of Harmony VFD calls are for emergency medical services.

Not only are we honored to serve you, we are also grateful for you.  It is because of you that we have the Ladies Auxiliary to assist with fundraising and coordinating rehab for our firefighters.  The Auxiliary was formed in 1977 to assist us with resources and to offer scholarships to high school seniors involved in the “Junior Firemen” or who have an immediate family member serving the Harmony VFD.

The Junior Firemen is an active program of Harmony VFD. All of our Junior Firemen are between the ages of 14-18, and have good/passing grades in all of their school classes. Our program teaches them  to serve the department, and also allows them to assist us with fundraisers and calls.

Currently, the fire department has 50 volunteer firefighters, 17 ladies Auxiliary members, and 15 junior firemen. Our First Responders must be firefighters or a members of the Auxiliary. We are 82 members strong, and we look forward to growing our firefighting family and meeting you at our next fundraising BBQs (held the first Saturday in May and November).
